Guitar Lessons Melbourne

Welcome…

Whether you’re a complete beginner, someone who can play a bit or an experienced player, I’m committed to providing you with the highest quality lessons.

I teach guitar lessons in Melbourne from my studio in Box Hill South. It’s a warm, friendly and relaxed environment where you’re encouraged and supported.

In the current Coronavirus climate lessons are available through Skype or Zoom if you’re not comfortable being face to face at this time.

On this page as you scroll down you will find some information on my philosophies of teaching guitar. Check it out and see if it’s the right fit for you.

My Guitar Lessons page has a bit more detailed information on the lessons and subjects covered.

The choice of teacher can be a difficult one to make; reading the experience others have had with a teacher is a good starting point. If you follow the link to the testimonials page you can read what past and present students have to say about me.

My approach to teaching…

Firstly let me say that I love to play and teach guitar, it’s something I’ve done my entire adult life. I get great joy from teaching and watching my students progress.

It’s important that I have a connection with you. If the personal connection is not there it makes the learning process difficult if not impossible. The lessons are informative and fun, something to look forward too…they should never be a chore.

This is why my lessons are private, one on one. Group guitar lessons just don’t cut it. They don’t foster the personal connection nor give you the individual attention needed when learning an instrument like the guitar.

My studio is a boutique operation, there is no turnover of teachers that you find in larger “sausage machine” music schools…I am it, your relationship is with me. You get me with all my years of knowledge and experience.

One thing my years of experience as a teacher have taught me is the need to have a plan in place. Even though you are an individual with your own specific needs, a basic framework for the lessons is important. It’s the method for ensuring and measuring progress in a logical well thought out way.

The lesson plans are constantly reviewed and tweaked to ensure you have the most current information and are getting industry best practice sessions. These plans are then adapted to your own specific needs.

Understand that guiding you along the path to success as a guitar player truly only comes with time teaching and playing guitar. There are no shortcuts…

How I can help you…

I would roughly divide people who approach me about lessons into 3 categories. The complete beginner, someone who can play a little and the experienced player.

Beginners really want to learn to play the guitar but often don’t know where to start. Some have tried to learn from the internet or books with little success.

My role is to guide them through the correct steps and get them playing properly from the start. Teaching the correct playing habits avoids unnecessary injury and helps them progress to playing the songs they want to play.

The person who has played a bit of guitar may want to get into a band, jam a bit or just improve for their own personal pleasure. They’ve often had no previous formal lessons

We work together to consolidate what they have done and build on it. It’s not about reinventing the wheel, it’s more about growing from where they are and moving forward.

The experienced player is often (not always) playing in professional situations. They want to play better but don’t know what to do next.

“Guitar Coaching” is the best approach for them (see below).

About guitar coaching…

Guitar coaching is available for the intermediate/advanced player looking for some new ideas and strategies to improve their playing.

Why do top sporting stars like Tiger Woods and Roger Federer have coaches? These guys are the best of the best, at the top of the heap. I mean who could teach Woods about golf or Federer about tennis? What goes on here?

Did you know that artists such as Prince, Stevie Wonder and Madonna, employ vocal coaches to work with them when they have important recordings and shows coming up? Surely they know how to sing by now. So…what goes on here?

Well…what goes on here is that all the raw talent and best intentions in the world won’t guarantee success. The lesson from the people at the top needs to flow down to everyone who wants to get better at their craft from the professional to the weekend warrior… Get help!

All performers whether they be sportspeople, actors, singers, dancers and yes even guitar players benefit by having someone, a coach working with them. I mean if the big guys are doing this stuff, why should we be left out?
